The idea behind Motor Oil Coffee came from, well, almost motor oil itself!

Our co-founder Joe was sent to car shows across the country on behalf of a client – and no matter if it was Pebble Beach, Kissimmee, New York City, or hell, Stillwater in Upstate New York and it made no difference if a car sold for $1 million or $1,000, the guys each morning setting up the show would say the same joke while tasting their first sips of coffee.

“Haha, this tastes like motor oil.”

And this was not a new joke, but they would all laugh the same. Joe kept on hearing this and said, “you know this would be a great brand name for a coffee.” (In a past life, Joe co-owned a coffee shop, so was familiar with the business of java). Best of all: no one owned the mark.

Joe thought maybe, just maybe, he could tinker with a wholesale brand sold online. He spoke to his primary business partner Rich, who at first wasn’t sold but came around to the idea.

And before long, Motor Oil Coffee was born.

our philosophy

Careful attention to speed, quality, and presentation.

Our founders both come from the movie theater exhibition industry – where speed, quality, and presentation are paramount. With that in mind, our retail locations are focused on those three tenets:

Speed – at a Motor Oil Coffee retail location, consumers should expect to receive their orders as fast as reasonably possible. Whereas at other coffee retailers, consumers could wait a while before receiving their order or any form of notification; at Motor Oil Coffee, we make sure you’re on your way either off to wherever you’re going or to your seat.

Quality – each location must focus on quality of each beverage and select food provided. Consumers should expect no less.

Presentation – each Motor Oil Coffee team member greets a consumer as if they’ve known each other for years. Team members are to be attentive to detail and to ensure the level of presentation consumers should expect when they see the Motor Oil Coffee logo.

Driven to serve you.

Motor Oil Coffee’s founders, Rich Fazio and Joe Bonilla, come from both a background of running an award-winning creative strategy firm, but also movie theater exhibition. This combination allows Motor Oil Coffee to expand through enhanced promotions, but also a focus on delivering a product to consumers that is focused on speed, quality, and presentation.

They may be similar in those areas, plus given both were born in Brooklyn, are Geminis, went to UAlbany, worked in the exhibition industry – Joe and Rich are appropriately different.

Whereas many see Joe’s exploits on social media, traversing the country by plane or bike, Rich wages the daily (and often losing) battle of raising two girls and a boy with his wife Casey. Rich is a fan of the New York Mets, where Joe is all for the Boston Red Sox. Rich, the New York Jets. Joe, the Los Angeles Rams. You get the idea.

And most importantly, where Joe is the big picture, big idea person who can be detail-focused but also lofty, Rich is rooted on making the mechanics work behind the scenes both financially and operationally. It’s a winning combination that has worked for more than a decade.
